Where did the strange name of Greek Latin sudoku come from?

The origin of this phrase is mathematical.

A Graeco-Latin square is the name given to this particular arrangement of values that is exhibited in the solution grid to this puzzle - namely where there are two values in each cell with each occurring once per region and each combination of the two values occurring once per puzzle also.

It is also sometimes called a Euler square.
