What are the rules of Nurikabe?
The rules of nurikabe state that you can only fill in empty cells, so you cannot change numbers in given cells, and every cell is either white or black, corresponding to islands in the ocean.
All the cells that are filled with water must be connected to each other - e.g. the ocean is continuous, whilst islands must be disconnected from all others and cannot touch each other, which makes sense.
Each island is composed of a stated number of cells given at the start of the puzzle so you must define the shape of each island, you cannot add islands or change the number of cells in an island as you go along.
Another important rule that some instructions miss out but is often required to solve the puzzles(!) is that you cannot have a 2 x 2 square of filled cells or ocean - this is important as knowing this is often required to help you determine what the cells of certain islands must be.
