What are the rules of inequality sudoku?

Also known as greater than or less than sudoku, this puzzle is similar to futoshiki in that it adds inequalities into the mix.

There are various versions of this puzzle.

The most common one has a sudoku grid with all its usual regions, and lots of greater than and less than signs between cells. These indicate which cells are greater/less than adjacent cells that are specified.

So here the numbers for once in sudoku actually have their numerical significance rather than acting merely as symbols as in normal sudoku.

Often there are no givens at all in the puzzle; sometimes you do get givens particularly in easier or starter puzzles.
