What are the rules of battleships?

This puzzle is really good fun, and requires you to deduce the location of a fleet of battleships in the grid.

These are runs of consecutive cells in accordance to the stated number of ships.

For instance if there are two ships of length four in the puzzle, this means there are two sets of four consecutive filled cells.

Around each battleship must be clear water, and in most versions of the rules adjacent cells must also be marked clear.

A good battleships puzzle is one that has a unique solution that can be worked out with logic alone and no guesswork being required.
