Your Favourite Crossword Clue

What is your favourite crossword clue?

For most people who solve general knowledge or cryptic crosswords, there are clues that stand out from time to time as being particularly memorable.

This could be because they were quite involved and hard to solve, with several strands that were interwoven that needed to be picked apart to solve the clue.

And sometimes it is because the clue is simple but ingenious.

One of the clues that from time to time gets mentioned as being particularly clever falls into the latter category.

The clue simply read:

Gegs (9, 4)

And the answer is... scrambled eggs!

I'm not sure where this clue originally appeared, but it is a great example of a simple but really clever little clue.

Many particularly clever clues require you to think laterally, but every clever clue is fair and once the answer is known you should be readily able to work out how the answer is derived from the clue.

It would be interesting to see what your favourite crossword clue is and why, so please do post your thoughts below!

Comments:

I quite like the clue referenced in the title of Alan Connor's book on crosswords: Two girls, one on each knee. It is simple - I think short clues work best - but also accurate and gives a chuckle when you get the answer.
