Cosy Crime Puzzle Book: Murder at the Millpond
Murder at the Millpond, released in September 2024, is the second of three books in our cosy crime puzzle book series, published by Collins). The book contains 100 puzzles across a huge variety of different types including logic, maths, word, number puzzles and more. Intriguingly, the book combines a fun story embedded around the 100 puzzles. As such you should solve the puzzles in order from start to end as the story and the puzzles are intertwined.
The story follows detective Heather Vintner, who is a police detective in the Upper Gorsetown area. Normally this is a sleepy village, but it has been rocked by a couple of sensational murders. Heather's job - and yours - is to work out whodunnit!
To do so you must follow along with the story and solve the puzzles. For instance, the first puzzle asks you to use logic to work out where the body was found:
You are told that the body is buried five squares away from the nearest tree and six paces away from the other two trees, and you are allowed to move one square at a time horizontally or vertically. Can you use this information to determine where in the diagram the body was found?
If you enjoyed solving the first puzzle, then there are 99 more to solve in the book! Have fun trying to solve along with Heather as you are introduced to the various characters in the book, some of them shadier than others, and work out who has ulterior motives and who is blameless along the way.
The book builds to a novel conclusion that will keep you guessing until the very end, and uses the two-stage final puzzle to help you narrow down Heather's deductions until it is finally revealed who committed the murders - if you are clever enough to solve the final puzzle correctly, that is!
The book is aimed at anyone who enjoys solving a range of puzzles and also likes reading crime fiction. Being a cosy crime story, there is nothing too graphic - think more Thursday Murder club combined with a large range of puzzles.
The puzzles are pitched at the medium level in the main, with a good sprinkling of easier ones too along with some harder challenges. So it is ideal for any casual puzzler or even enthusiastic teenagers; and all of the solutions are included at the back of the book so if you do get stuck at any point it is easy to find out the solution.
We hope you really enjoy the twists and turns of the narrative as Heather and her colleagues work their way through the case, gradually whittling down to the most likely suspects and then the big reveal at the end. If you did enjoy the book, then we'd love to hear from you, so please do feel free to share any thoughts or comments below and, once checked, we'll publish them.
There are two other books in the series - the first is called Killer on the Canal and the third is called Mystery on the Tracks. You might like to collect the whole set of three.
Happy solving!
