Extra Region Sudoku
Extra Region sudoku puzzles is the name used to describe in general any sudoku puzzle that has more than the standard 27 regions that comprise the ordinary 9 x 9 sudoku puzzle: that is the nine rows, columns and 3 x 3 boxes of the standard puzzle.Popular variants in the extra regions bracket include sudoku X for instance, which adds the X regions. Other variants also exist, in particular the addition of four extra box regions as illustrated here.
Extra region sudoku variants are interesting, and are particularly good when used in to add some variety to a standard sudoku title. Adding something like 10 - 20% of other puzzle types along the same lines keeps things interesting and saves players from getting sudoku fatigue from doing nothing but standard sudoku. With a large range of possible extra sudoku variants, and the number of regions and their shape varying from one puzzle type to the next, there is a lot of scope and capacity within extra regions sudoku to make some very interesting and novel puzzles.
