Of all the puzzles that masquerade under multiple names, Hanjie is probably one of the worst offenders! Known variously as hanjie, nonograms, griddler and various others besides, the only thing that doesn't change is the satisfaction at completing a hanjie puzzle.
The aim of the puzzle is to work out whether each cell in the puzzle grid is to be shaded in or is blank. Once you have worked this out for all cells, the result will be an image, a clue to the identity of which is given with the hanjie puzzle. If you're not familiar with hanjie, then the rules are simple. The grid starts empty, and there are number clues at the start of each row and column. These tell you how many cells in that row or column are filled, and a little bit of information about the distribution. A clue such as 2,3,1 means that there is a group of two adjacent filled cells somewhere in the region, followed by a gap of at least one cell, then a group of three filled cells, then a gap of at least one cell, then a single filled cell. Thus a comma indicates at least one empty cell that is used to separate groups of adjacent filled cells. Just simple logic is required to solve these compelling puzzles, but they can be quite difficult to solve and require a lot of time and attention!
