Battleships puzzles are a popular logic puzzle. The aim is simple: you must locate a fleet of ships of varying length in the puzzle grid.
The grid size itself may vary from puzzle to puzzle, and is usually (although not always) square. Common sizes in print are 6 x 6, 8 x 8 and 10 x 10. The fleet of ships that you must find will typically include ships of size 1, 2, 3, 4 and possibly 5. Sometimes even larger ships must be located.
At the start of the battleships puzzle, you will be told how many ships of each length are hidden in the grid that you must locate. Some ship parts may be placed to help you get started, and sometimes water is also placed.
The rules are simple: a square in the grid can either contain water or a ship part. Parts of different ships cannot touch each other horizontally, vertically or diagonally. The sample solution grid to the right makes this clear: you can see that each ship is fully surrounded by water. In this example, there are 3 ships of length 1, 2 ships of length 2 and 3 and 1 ship of length 1 and 5.
In the starting grid of a battleships puzzle, numbers are placed at the end of each row and column, and these tell you how many ship segments are placed in that particular row or column. No information is given about how those ship segments are distributed (unlike the logic puzzle hanjie which you may be familiar with).
Battleships are an enjoyable puzzle to solve as there are many interesting logical rules that can be used to help the player solve them, and many of the more subtle rules reveal themselves subtlely as you get more familiar with solving this puzzle type.
