Speed Maths Puzzles

Speed Maths and Arithmetic are a great way to dust the cobwebs off your brain and give yourself a short and quick mental challenge. If you haven't performed sums or tried adding something up without a calculator since school, then don't worry if you find them hard to do within the time constraints at first.

With the recent media focus on keeping our minds in shape through frequent mental exercise, speed maths puzzles are a great mind game for all the family to participate in: pit your wits against your children and see what they've learnt at school and whether they can beat you at performing the sums and getting the right answer:

Sample Test Questions

Give yourself ten seconds and no more to answer each of these four sample questions:

  1. What is 1 x 3 x 4 x 5?

  2. What is 356 - 167?

  3. What is 13 x 13?

  4. Which mathematical symbol (e.g. plus, minus...) should replace the question mark in this sum: speed maths
Don't worry if you weren't able to answer all of these correctly in the time given - with practice every few days you will soon get better and quicker at mental manipulation and reap the rewards that come with a sharpened mind!
