If you are intrigued by this puzzle type, then you might be interested in buying our new book containing nothing but 100 tatamidoku puzzles. These will be a welcome and interesting alternative for sudoku lovers, and are sure to offer hours of enjoyment. Other names for this fun Japanese logic puzzle include tatami and tatami-duko.
The tatamidoku puzzles in this book come in two sizes: 6x6 and 8x8. For the 6x6 puzzles, the grids are divided into rectangular regions containing three squares each. To complete these, you need to place the numbers 1, 2 and 3 exactly once in each of these rectangles, so that each number occurs exactly twice in each row and column of the puzzle. Make sure that each number isn't placed in squares that touch horizontally or vertically, although they can appear in diagonally adjacent squares.
With the 8x8 grids, the rules are the same as for the 6x6 grids, but be aware that now you will be placing the numbers 1,2,3 and 4 once per rectangle of four squares, and twice per row/column.
Solutions are featured at the back of the book if you need a helping hand or want to check your answers.
All puzzles can be solved through the application of logic alone - there is never any need to guess. Many of the solving rules you use for sudoku will be familiar whilst solving these puzzles, but there are also some unique rules relating specifically to the tatamidoku puzzle and the rules therein. Part of the joy of the puzzle is finding these out as you start solving!
