More About Offset SudokuOffset sudoku is a very colourful puzzle, with the usual black-and-white sudoku grid replaced with a grid containing nine different shades.
Each of the shades represents a different region of nine cells, for instance if you look at the example image to the right of an offset sudoku puzzle, then you'll see that the 3 x 3 boxes are broken down into nine cells of different colours, such as yellow and green.
This is because each position within a 3 x 3 box has added significant over ordinary sudoku, and corresponds to an additional region of nine cells.
Thus the yellow cells must all contain a different number from 1 - 9, as must each of the other positions within each 3 x 3 box, in addition to the standard sudoku rules.
Because of this rule the puzzle is usually printed in full colour to help assist with this - if printed in black and white it would be tricky to work on these additional nine regions without the immediate visual clue that is provided by the colours.
As these puzzles have more regions than standard sudoku the options for cells are more restricted, and thus one can whittle down the options more quickly. This in turn means that there will be tend to be a few less givens with offset sudoku puzzles compared with standard sudoku puzzles and their 27 regions as opposed to the 36 here.
