Business Angels are wealthy individuals or syndicates who invest equity into high growth businesses. In addition to the equity a business angel will often work with a business, utilising their own skills and expertise, especially in the early stages of development.
Business Angels rarely have any connection with a company prior to an investment; however most will have a wealth of experience in the industry or sector. The commitment of business Angels is very strong; this is understandable as they are generally proven in business.
The majority of Business Angels make investments for financial gain; however there are at times other motives for investment. An Angel may wish to take an active part in an entrepreneurial process or simply for the enjoyment of being part of a success story. When questioned a lot of Angels simply stated they wanted to put something back in.
Business Angels are an important but still under-utilised source of money for new and growing businesses. A business angel on average will make one or two investments in a three-year period, either individually or as part of a syndicate.
