Sudoku with the 'X' FactorFirst there was sudoku. Then not long after came a range of variant sudoku puzzles. The first to be seen, and the most frequently seen for a long time, was sudoku X. However over the last few years it is seen less commonly, either with standard sudoku dominating or more interesting variants such as killer sudoku, futoshiki, calcudoku and a range of other puzzles. Sudoku X is what is known as an extra-regions variant of sudoku, for obvious reasons: there are no rule changes at all (as opposed to puzzles like killer sudoku), but merely extra regions added to the puzzle: in this case the two extra regions that are the main diagonals. Sudoku X solves in the same way as ordinary sudoku, one must just remember to take into account these extra regions. As there are extra regions then sudoku X may have less givens than ordinary sudoku puzzles. The most common size for the sudoku X puzzle is a 9 x 9 grid size, but they do occasionally also appear at size 6 x 6; other sizes are almost completely unseen. If you like ordinary sudoku and are looking for a simple variant, then sudoku X could be the one for you! If you'd like to have a go at a Sudoku X puzzle, then you can use our online Sudoku X player.
