What is a sliding block puzzle?

This is a classic type of puzzle in which you have a series of blocks in a given position.

The number, shape and size of the blocks varies from puzzle to puzzle, but the aim is the same in each case: to move from the starting position to a specified finish position.

Typically the finished puzzle may require to have every square in a particular position, or often it is to move one particular piece from one position to another: for instance from the top to the bottom of the grid.
