The key to solving a word square is to remember that the grid will read the same top to bottom as it does left to right at the end.
Therefore when you are uncertain what the answer to a clue is - often because there is more than one possible word that will fit - the above knowledge can be used to help you whittle down the options.
For instance perhaps one of the candidate words you are considering would mean that you place letters in the grid that make it impossible for a word to fit elsewhere in the grid - in which case you can eliminate that option.
The clues themselves are very much crossword like, so in that instance the better you are at crosswords the easier you may find these puzzles. Of course you don't need to solve the clues in order and one answer may occur to you much more readily than another.
