There are various strategies that can be used to solve these puzzles.
If you have solved killer sudoku before then you are well prepared to solve these puzzles, as they combine the familiar elements of summing up regions and using orthodox sudoku rules.
Infact you could consider outside sudoku to be a partial killer sudoku puzzle, and you could rewrite the numbers outside the grid as dotted cages for the first/last three cells in each row and column.
It is, like in killer sudoku, a good idea to look first at the regions around the edge that have very few options, perhaps only one, and then place in the candidates for these. By doing this you can quickly start to whittle down the options and make progress with solving the puzzles.
